Celtic Influences

TV has been swept up in the Celtic Mania
Even "Hercules" has a pretty Celtic friend now, and she has proven to be as adept with weapons as with words. Amazingly they have even pulled King Arthur into the series for a brief appearance as well as poor Merlin, who was portrayed in his youthful years as a clumsy, nervous tea drinker... I see no-one on the staff there saw fit to check just when the British got into the Tea habit. Xena had her adventures with Bouddica, and one wonders if we are to assume that without these brave Greco-Roman characters all of the Celts would simply have fallen prey to their villains and vanished into the mists of time.
Unfortunately....
We are also subjected to inane programming beyond the scope of that which Xena's producers create... Now we have to contend with "the Mystic Knights of Tir Na'Nog". If the Tuatha have to witness that show, it must surely make them that much more eager to stay hidden from the mortal worlds. Having watched two episodes just to give it a fair chance, I can honestly say "PowerRangers" was easier to stomach. Sadly, this may be the only way that todays children learn the stories and myths of the celts. Where did the realism of "Roar" go? It went a bit left field for a while, but in the main it was a good program. So where can we look for some useful Celtic influence in the media?
It's in the music.
When you tune in to a Maritime Radio station you can be fairly sure of picking up a Celtic rhythm somewhere along the line. Whether it be the modern sounds of MaryJane Lamond and Ashley MacIssac, the Rankins, Rawlins Cross or Great Big Sea, all of whom have put their own spin into the ancient sounds, or the more traditional sounds such as the Cheiftains, Loreena MacKennitt, and Clannad, there can be found sounds to soothe the soul. More and more musicians in the maritimes have turned to the celtic roots and been inspired to take up the chants and tunes of the emerald isles. It's a comforting turn of events which I hope will become a lasting trend.
